シンプルな学習法が近道

彼らは効果のあるシンプルな学習方法を提示しても素直に受け入れてくれないことがよくあります。口癖は「それはわかってるんですが・・・」「それだけでいいんですか・・・」です。
They often have no ears when someone suggests a simple yet effective method. They always say
“I already know that.” or “Is that really enough?”

音読の仕方一つをとっても細かな方法をたくさん知っている方がいます。私はこれを練習法マニアと呼んでいます。
すごく練習方法に神経質になってしまって、「で、結局何個の英文を何回読んだのですか？」と聞くとごにょごにょとだまってしまう。そういう方がとても多かったんですね。
Some of them even know various detailed methods of such very simple things like reading aloud.
I call them “textbook addicts”. I’ve seen quite a lot of people who are nervous about finding out how to practice but can’t give me a clear answer when asked, “So, you’ve read how many passages how many times, in total?”

また初心者の方に「こんな方法もある、あんな方法もある」といきなり細かな方法を教えてしまう本もありますが、それは良くないと教えてきた経験から感じています。
On the other hand, some textbooks for beginners go into the details of whatever methods have crossed the authors’ mind, but I know from experience that that’s not a good idea.

それは自分の知識をひけらかしているだけで効果的な方法ではないからです。大事な部分、これだけは教えておかないと絶対ぶつかってしかも超えられない、挫けてしまうなというものを最初に教えるにとどめるようにしました。
Those textbooks are not effective because the authors are just showing off their knowledge. So, in my textbook, I show you only the minimum amount of knowledge which is necessary to avoid getting stuck or becoming frustrated halfway through the learning process.

初心者の方にはわかりやすく、上級者の方には無駄な情報をそぎ落としてあげたい。これが私の狙いです。ですので、シンプルです。シンプルな方法論だと不安になる気持ちもわかります。
My aim is to make the point clear for beginners, and to get rid of any unnecessary information for advanced learners. So I’ve made my textbook simple. You may think my method is too simple and feel nervous. I understand how you feel.

ですのでシンプルですが、その方法にはきちんとした理由があることをきちんと説明していきます。
So I’m going to explain clearly that there is a good reason for being simple.

ゆらいでほしくないからです。ゆらぐとマニュアルマニアになってしまいますから。
I don’t want you to get lost. If you get lost, you’ll end up becoming another textbook addict.
